In the field of law, what are the differences between the JD, LLM, and MLS degrees?
I am a senior at Bowie State Univ. majoring in Sociology/Criminal Justice (Spanish Minor). I am looking at various graduate programs. When I checked out Georgetown’s Law School, I noticed they have JD, LLM, and MLS programs. What, exactly are the differences between these programs? What professions/specialties are each designed for?
I am an attorney, and a J.D. is just a basic 3 yr law degree. An LLM and MLS are both the equivalent to a masters degree, and require more detailed study. To pass the bar exam in any state all you need is a J.D. If you want to teach you may want to get a higher degree. Hope that helps.
