Like most private universities and colleges, Georgetown is a very expensive place to obtain an education. Don’t just focus on the cost of tuition – there are many more expenses involved in attending college.
The estimated Cost of Attendance for a single year at Georgetown is over $55,000 – multiply that by 4 years of undergraduate work, and you’re looking at $220,000 for a bachelor’s degree education.
Georgetown offers generous financial assistance, but that’s like saying that Ferrari offers generous discounts on the sticker price of their cars. If Georgetown offered you $30,000 in financial aid, that would be a ton of aid, but you’d still have a $25,000 balance that you’d have to pay on your own.
If you’re thinking law school – slow down a little. Before you can even apply to law school, you’ll have to earn a bachelor’s degree – and not necessarily at Georgetown. If Georgetown Law is like most law schools, they don’t offer any favoritism to Georgetown undergrads when it comes to admission.
Law school is a graduate degree program – that’s another 3 years of school that comes after you graduate with your bachelor’s degree. Most law students don’t live on campus, so it’s a little trickier to estimate your total expenses – tuition alone is about $21,000 a year, and room and board will run you another $10-15,000 each year (at least).
Can you get into Georgetown as an undergrad? That’s a good question. Georgetown is highly selective, and only offers admission to about 20% of all of the hopefuls who apply. You’re going to need to focus your efforts on A’s, not B’s, and make sure that you take the most challenging courses that you can. Honors and AP courses are great. It’s not all about grades – or even your SAT scores – you’d be surprised just how many Georgetown applicants have great grades and test scores.
Like other highly selective schools, Georgetown looks for (and at) the “total package”. Your activities outside of the classroom as just as interesting as your activities within. Remember, Georgetown has a Jesuit tradition, so they’re all about community service and integrity. Get involved in extra-curricular activities – don’t just be a study wonk.
Keep working towards your Georgetown dream, but measure it with a dose of reality – that’s a LOT of money to pay for school, and it may not be financially reasonable for you and your family. That’s your number one consideration – whether it’s a dream that you can actually afford.
Good luck to you!
