New Truancy Law for Ontario Canada Drop Outs?
I have a niece who has been in some problems at school. She ran away from home and moved to another city to live with her boyfriend. My neice is only 16 and the school’s guidance counselor has been calling my sister informing her that she must compel my niece to go to school until she turns 18. My niece is in regular contact with her mom, but we do not have an address where we can locate her. My sister is wondering what will happen if she cannot force her daughter to attend high school. I have been doing some research of my own online and the only punishment I can seem to find is that driver’s license privileges are removed. Additionally, my niece has a restrainging order against her from a female student at her high school and is unable to return to her alternative high school. Thank you for any information that you can provide.
She needs to tell the guidence counselor that her daughter is basically uncontrollable and that she can’t get her to go to school on her own. They’ll probably take over for her, which means that they’ll basically wait for her to get arrested and sent back to her parents to force her to go to school.
Even then, after awhile, the school won’t even bother trying to force her into school. It costs the school system less money to let her be truant than it would be to continually send police officers after her, and harrass her mother.
Thats how it works in the US anyway. I can’t imagine its that much different in Canada.
